10 Things Every Teacher Needs in Their Classroom
Teaching is rewarding, but we all know it comes with its challenges. From keeping students engaged to managing your classroom efficiently, having the right tools can make all the difference. Here are 10 must-have items for every teacher, with some of my favorite picks that you can grab online. (And yes, a few of these links are affiliate links — they help support this blog at no extra cost to you!)
1. A Durable Planner
Organization is key! A good planner helps you track lesson plans, meetings, and student progress all in one place. I take my planner with me everywhere! I even use it to highlight what will be graded for the next week so I know what I need to make modifications on. Look for planners with monthly and weekly views, plus sections for notes. this planner comes in a lot of fun teacher patterns.
2. Colorful Markers & Pens
Markers, pens, and highlighters aren’t just for grading. They make lessons visually appealing and can be used for classroom activities or student projects. I like to grade in fun colors that aren't red, because it feels so cliche to me. I make sure to stock up on this set at the beginning of every year. As for highlighters, I don't think I can keep enough of them in my desk. I fell like I use them more then pens, whether it's to use them to write something for the kids to trace over when they do not know how to spell something, or highlighting the things I need to modify in my planner.
3. Classroom Storage Solutions
Keeping supplies organized makes a classroom run smoother. Bins, baskets, and drawer organizers are lifesavers for storing everything from art supplies to manipulatives. I purchased this drawer cart, and as a bonus craft you can use your Cricut to personalize all the drawers. I absolutely love the soft colors of this cart.
I personized my cart with the days of the week, then made a drawer for grading, filing, and copying.
4. A Durable Pencil Sharpener
My students LOVE to sharpen their pencils, but pencil sharpeners can be so expensive. In the past I have bought the cheaper ones, but they just do not last. I bought this one last year, and even though it was more expensive, it was definitely worth it as it has lasted two years now and is still working just as good as it did day one.
5. A Comfortable Chair & Desk Setup
Teachers spend hours at their desk grading, planning, or meeting with students. A supportive chair can prevent back pain and keep you comfortable all day. The ones that my school purchase for us are not the comfiest, so if you are able I would recommend getting a chair that will keep you comfy all day.
6. Classroom Library Essentials
A cozy reading corner encourages literacy and engagement. If you have enough room I would suggest these bean bag chairs that can be wiped down if needed. Include a mix of books for different reading levels and interests. Don’t forget book bins or organizers!
7. Educational Games & Manipulatives- Plus a way to organize them
Hands-on learning tools help students grasp tricky concepts. Our math program came with a bunch of math manipulatives. I organized them into these bins and when it is math time, the kids know to grab a "math toolbox" for their groups. I keep simple games for the kids to play in the classroom, one of their absolute favorites year after year is this Sneaky Squirrel Game.
8. Tech Tools & Accessories
In our classrooms we have Smart Boards with wireless keyboards. I like being able to move around the room while I am teaching, but still want to control the Smart Board. I have found this rolling cart is the perfect height, and love the extra storage it has. As an added bonus it is also the perfect height to use as a standing desk for younger elementary kids.
9. Classroom Decor
Engaging visuals make your classroom inviting. Posters, inspirational quotes, and bulletin board sets can brighten up any space and set the tone for learning. I like having calming colors in my room, that make it feel clean and welcoming. I use this solid border paired with this rainbow border for around my classroom bulletin boards. For the back of bulletin boards I swear by Better then Paper. It really holds up well, and even though it is expensive, I have not had to replace it even after a few years of pinning and repining things onto it.
10. Teacher Self-Care Items
Finally, don’t forget yourself! A water bottle, comfy slippers, or a desk plant can make your day a little brighter and remind you to take care of yourself.
